NYC Boroughs

Every Borough, Covered

NYC's five boroughs each have distinct housing stock and chimney conditions. Here's what we typically see and handle in each one.

Manhattan

Manhattan's housing stock runs from 1890s brownstones on the Upper West Side to mid-century high-rises on the East Side. Many fireplaces here were converted from coal to wood burning decades ago, and the liner condition is often the main concern. We also handle chimney repair in Manhattan for buildings where the masonry has been exposed to decades of freeze-thaw cycles.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn has one of the densest concentrations of residential chimneys in the country. Row houses in Park Slope, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens were built between roughly 1880 and 1930, and many have original clay tile liners. These liners crack with age and need inspection before each heating season. We provide bird nest removal in Park Slope frequently, since older uncapped chimneys attract starlings and sparrows.

Queens

Queens has a wide mix of attached brick colonials, Cape Cods from the postwar era, and multi-family homes. Flushing, Jamaica, Forest Hills, and Bayside all have active fireplace use during winter. The biggest recurring issue we find in Queens is deteriorated mortar joints on the chimney crown and missing or damaged chimney caps, which allow water into the flue.

The Bronx

Riverdale and Fieldston in the Bronx have older single-family homes with full masonry chimneys that see regular use. Many of these homes date from the 1920s through 1950s and have never had a professional liner assessment. We see stacked creosote buildup more often in the Bronx than in some other boroughs, partly because older flue configurations restrict airflow and encourage incomplete combustion.

Staten Island

Staten Island has a higher proportion of single-family homes than the other boroughs, and many were built with factory-built fireplaces rather than full masonry systems. These units require specific sweep methods and different inspection criteria than traditional masonry. Salt air from the harbor also accelerates mortar deterioration on exposed chimneys closer to the shoreline.

Nearby Towns

Towns We Serve Outside the Five Boroughs

Our service area extends well beyond the city limits. These towns are within our regular schedule, and we bring the same technical standards to every job regardless of location.

Yonkers, NY

Yonkers has a dense stock of early 20th century homes with clay tile flue systems. Creosote accumulation and liner cracking are the most common findings on first-time inspections here.

Hoboken, NJ

Hoboken's row houses share many characteristics with Brooklyn brownstones. For properties that have sustained water or storm damage, we offer emergency storm damage chimney repair in Hoboken.

Jersey City, NJ

Jersey City has older brownstones near the waterfront and newer townhomes in Journal Square. Both building types benefit from annual sweeping if the fireplace is used regularly through the winter.

Flushing, NY

Flushing has a mix of attached brick homes and converted multi-families. Chase covers on prefab chimneys here tend to rust faster due to limited roof pitch and standing water.

Astoria, NY

Astoria's brick row houses and semi-detached homes date primarily from the 1920s to 1960s. Shared chimney walls between adjoining units are common and require careful inspection to confirm there is no cross-flue contamination.

Long Island City, NY

Long Island City has a growing number of converted loft buildings with gas fireplace inserts. We also handle emergency storm damage chimney repair in Long Island City after heavy weather events.

Bayside, NY

Bayside's single-family Colonial and Cape Cod homes were built largely between 1940 and 1970. Many have original firebrick fireboxes that have never been relined and benefit from a Level 2 inspection before seasonal use.

Forest Hills, NY

Forest Hills Gardens has some of the most architecturally detailed homes in Queens, many with tall multi-flue chimneys. Height adds sweep time and occasionally requires ladder staging for exterior access.

Riverdale, NY

Riverdale's hillside homes and older apartment buildings with decorative chimneys often have inactive flues that still need periodic cleaning to prevent debris buildup and pest entry.

New Rochelle, NY

New Rochelle has a range of Tudor and Colonial Revival homes from the 1920s and 1930s with full masonry chimneys. We provide chimney odor sealing in New Rochelle where draft problems allow outdoor air and associated smells into the living space.

White Plains, NY

White Plains has a broad mix of housing from postwar ranches to newer construction. Prefab metal chimneys on these properties need specific attention to the chase cover and cap sealing since they are more prone to water infiltration than masonry systems.

Hempstead, NY

Hempstead and its surrounding villages have a high concentration of 1940s and 1950s Cape Cods with functional wood-burning fireplaces. We also handle emergency chimney leak repair in Hempstead when storms cause flashing or crown failures.

Jamaica, NY

Jamaica's older residential neighborhoods have a mix of brick row houses and detached homes with masonry chimneys that often show signs of neglect. First-time sweeps in these properties frequently involve removing several seasons of creosote accumulation.

Park Slope, NY

Park Slope brownstones are among the most frequently swept properties in our schedule. Many have two or three active flues per building, and bird nest blockages are a recurring issue in late spring and early fall.

Bay Ridge, NY

Bay Ridge has attached brick homes built predominantly between 1910 and 1950, many with original clay tile flue liners. Salt exposure from proximity to the Narrows accelerates mortar joint erosion on the upper sections of chimneys here.

Why Choose Prime Chimney

What Makes Us the Go-To Sweep in This Region

We work on chimneys every day across NYC, Westchester, Nassau County, and northern New Jersey. That volume means we encounter a wide variety of flue types, liner conditions, and building configurations. When something unusual comes up on your job, it's likely we've seen it before.

We sweep wood-burning fireplaces, gas fireplaces, oil flues, and prefab metal systems. Each requires a different approach. A gas flue sweep is not the same process as clearing a wood-burning chimney with stage-two creosote, and we don't treat them the same way.

✓

Full range of inspection tiers

From a standard Tier 1 inspection to a Tier 3 structural inspection, we perform all levels of chimney assessment.

✓

Transparent pricing before the job starts

Review our chimney service cost guide for NYC to understand what different jobs typically involve. Price varies with chimney height, liner condition, and what the sweep reveals.

✓

Repair capability on the same visit

If we find a cracked crown, failed flashing, or a damaged cap during the sweep, we can often handle it the same day. We carry common repair materials on the truck.

✓

We follow NYC permit requirements

For jobs that require permits, we are familiar with NYC chimney permit requirements and can advise you on when a permit applies to your job.

✓

Emergency availability

We offer emergency chimney leak repair and urgent appointments for situations that can't wait for a routine scheduling window.

What's Included

What Happens During a Chimney Sweep

A standard sweep takes two to four hours depending on chimney height, access, and condition. Here is what we do, in the order we do it.

01

Access and prep

We lay drop cloths around the firebox opening and seal it with a work cover to contain debris. If we are working from the roof, we inspect the chimney top, cap, and crown before opening the flue.

02

Flue brushing

We use rotary brushes sized to your flue dimensions to break loose soot, creosote, and debris from the liner walls. For stage-two creosote (the glazed, hardened type), chemical treatment may be needed before brushing is effective.

03

Vacuum extraction

An industrial HEPA vacuum runs continuously during brushing to prevent fine particles from spreading into the room. We remove all debris from the smoke chamber, damper shelf, and firebox.

04

Smoke chamber and damper inspection

We inspect the smoke chamber corbeling and the damper plate for corrosion or warping. A stuck or corroded damper is one of the most common causes of smoking fireplaces and should be addressed before the heating season.

05

Liner visual check

After cleaning, we inspect the accessible liner sections with a flashlight. If there are signs of cracking or spalling, we recommend a camera inspection at a Tier 2 level to assess the full length of the flue.

06

Written summary

We provide a written summary of what was found, what was cleaned, and any follow-up work that is recommended. You'll know exactly what condition your chimney is in before we leave.

Additional services flagged during a sweep: If the sweep reveals issues like mortar deterioration, missing caps, waterproofing needs, or animal intrusion, we can explain the options and provide a separate estimate for chimney mortar repointing, chimney cap installation, chimney waterproofing, or animal removal. Each service is scoped and priced separately.

Common Questions

Chimney Sweep FAQ for NYC Homeowners

Answers to what most homeowners ask before scheduling a sweep.

How often should I have my chimney swept in NYC?

If you burn wood regularly, once per season is the standard recommendation. If you burn gas logs, every two years is generally sufficient unless you notice draft problems or odor. NYC's older housing stock often means chimneys go longer between sweeps than they should. If you have never had yours cleaned, schedule one before the first fire of the season regardless of how long since the last one.

What does a chimney sweep cost in NYC?

Cost varies with chimney height, flue count, and condition. A single-flue sweep in a standard brownstone or row house will typically cost more than a ranch house in the suburbs because of the building height and access considerations. See the full chimney service cost guide for NYC for a detailed breakdown of factors that affect pricing. We quote before we start.

Is it safe to use my fireplace if I haven't had it swept this year?

That depends on how it was last used and what's in the flue. If the last sweep was within the past year and you burned no more than two to three cords of wood, a visual check may be enough. If it has been several years, or if you see heavy soot staining above the firebox opening, you should have it swept before lighting another fire. Creosote buildup is the leading cause of chimney fires. Read more about NYC chimney maintenance to understand the risk factors.

When is the best time to schedule a chimney sweep in NYC?

September and October are peak scheduling months because homeowners want the chimney ready before the heating season. Availability is tighter then. Scheduling in late summer or after the heating season ends in spring is generally easier and may give you more scheduling flexibility. We also respond to urgent calls for heating season issues that come up mid-winter.

Will the sweep make a mess in my home?

We use drop cloths and a HEPA vacuum throughout the job to contain dust and debris. In most cases, there is no measurable dust in the room after we finish. Older chimneys with significant deterioration can generate more fine debris, and we'll let you know if that's a possibility for your specific setup before we start work. We clean up before we leave. For specific details on the sweep process and what to expect, see our chimney sweeping NYC service page.
